Brandon A. Mines M.D. is a board-certified family medicine and sports medicine physician. He is currently Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at Emory University School of Medicine, where he has focused his clinical interest on sports injuries, concussion management, and ultrasound imaging. Dr. Mines is also the Head Team Medical Physician for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, and serves as their primary sports medicine and concussion specialist. This is in addition to serving as the Head Team Physician for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, and as an Associate Team Physician for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.
As one of the 12 valued members of the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee (as well as the NFLPS Representative on the committee) Dr. Mines uses his expertise in identifying, treating, and managing mild traumatic brain injury to help develop concussion protocols for the NFL. This is in addition to being a member on two other committees: the NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative and the NFL Lower Extremity Soft Tissue Injury Task Force. Dr. Mines was also appointed to the NFL Physician Society (NFLPS) Board in April 2023.
In the past, Dr. Mines served as a rotational physician for US Soccer and has traveled internationally with several teams, responsible for all medical and orthopedic care of team players. In addition to working with professional athletes, Dr. Mines also works with collegiate athletes in his role as Medical Director for the athletic department at Clark Atlanta University. Extremely well-respected, Dr. Mines is exceedingly experienced in the professional athletic realm, with vast knowledge in treating sports-related injuries, particularly concussion diagnosis and management, as well as being active in its research and education. As such, he is an in-demand speaker on the lecture circuit for these particular topics. As an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, he has attended and presented at various national conferences, again lecturing on topics related to his focused clinical interest.
Dr. Mines was also proud to co-author the chapter, "Sports-Related Concussions in Children” in the “Routledge Handbook of Coaching Children in Sport” by Martin Tomes and Ruth Jeans, released at the end of 2022. Dr. Mines is very passionate about finding time to engage and work with underserved areas, as part of his personal mission to make a positive impact in his local community. As a member of 100 Black Men of America (Dekalb County chapter), he is an influential mentor for middle and high school students in Atlanta, and acts as a supervising physician for various local high school and soccer clubs. It is important to Dr. Mines to foster a network of like-minded professionals and activists who share his dedication to giving back and improving the lives of those in our surrounding communities.
When he is not working at one of his many positions, Dr. Mines enjoys spending time with his wife and three young sons as well as being an award-winning homebrewer, Big Green Egg aficionado and engaging in mountain biking and other activities in the great outdoors of Atlanta, Georgia.
